From Mexico to Mzansi: It's Tequila, But Make It Local!
This past November, La Tierra Agave proudly participated in the International Wine and Spirits Festival in Cape Town, and what an incredible experience it was! The atmosphere was alive with excitement as people from all over gathered to celebrate the world of exceptional wines and spirits. It was an honor to showcase our local Tequila made in South Africa and introduce attendees to the unique flavors crafted from the heart of the Karoo.

Celebrating our Local tequila made in south africa
One of the most common questions we received at the festival was why we call our spirits Agave spirits instead of Tequila.
Attendees were really fascinated to learn that the term “Tequila” is legally protected and can only be used for spirits made in designated regions of Mexico. However, the best way to explain what we do is by saying Tequila made in South Africa—a phrase that perfectly captures the essence of our brand.
This inspired our slogan, “From Mexico to Mzansi”—it’s like Tequila, but proudly made locally. Crafted with the same passion and care as traditional Tequila, our Agave spirits highlight the unique flavors of the Karoo, bringing an authentic South African twist to this classic spirit.

La Tierra Agave Shines at the Festival
The festival attracted a remarkable crowd, buzzing with excitement and eager to explore the diverse offerings of both local and international brands. There was a palpable energy in the air, with festival-goers keen to try something new and unexpected. We were thrilled to see so many enthusiastic faces at our booth, sampling our La Tierra Agave Blanco and Reposado spirits.
As one of the few producers offering local Tequila made in South Africa, we felt immense pride in sharing the story of how the Karoo’s unique environment shapes our product. The rugged beauty of this arid landscape, with its harsh winds and rich soil, imparts a distinct flavor profile to our Agave spirits that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. It was a moment to connect with our community, share the magic of the Karoo, and showcase the heart and soul poured into every bottle of La Tierra Agave.

Throughout the event, festival-goers were captivated by the unique flavors of our Blanco, with its refreshing earthy notes of green pepper and the sweet richness of roasted Agave. It quickly became the go-to choice for cocktail lovers, offering a crisp, vibrant taste that was as bold as it was smooth.
We offered a delicious cocktail called the Mzansi Blanco Blush, made with fresh grapefruit and lemon juice, cranberry, and a splash of sparkle. The combination of tart fruit and the Blanco’s natural sweetness created a drink that was both lively and refreshing, perfectly paired withMercados lime and chipotle nacho chips that added an extra layer of flavor to the experience.

The Reposado also captured a lot of attention, with its smooth vanilla and oak notes providing a delightful experience for those who appreciated sipping spirits neat. Its balanced complexity made it a standout, offering a warming and rich mouthfeel that lingered long after each sip.
The Karoo Pineapple Kicker was the crowd favorite, made with pineapple juice, fresh orange and lemon juice, and a homemade jalapeño syrup. This refreshing yet spicy concoction offered a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and heat, making it an instant hit. This was perfectly paired with J&M Droëwors.

As we chatted with attendees, many were surprised to learn that high-quality Tequila made in South Africa is a reality. This opened up meaningful conversations about how the Karoo’s Agave Americana thrives in the local climate, producing a spirit that rivals traditional Mexican Tequila while bringing its unique South African essence to the glass.
It was clear that there’s a growing appreciation for locally crafted spirits. The festival’s focus on highlighting exceptional South African products gave us the perfect platform to showcase why our local Tequila made in South Africa stands out in the global market.
Exploring International and Local Craftsmanship
The festival wasn’t just a celebration of local talent; it also brought together an impressive lineup of international producers showcasing their expertise. From premium gins and aged whiskeys to brandies and artisanal rums, there was something for every palate.

Proudly South African Spirits

Our standout favourites included the most delicious South African Limoncello from Bella Baci, a unique range of whiskeys from Aerotude, and a cinamon and chilli South African aperitif from Bangbroek ,perfect for shooting.
